Detroit Mother Charged With Murder After Son’s Body Found Buried in Backyard

Authorities Uncover Chilling Crime

A Detroit woman has been charged with murder after authorities discovered the body of her 9-year-old son buried in a shallow grave in her backyard. The shocking case has drawn outrage from prosecutors and law enforcement officials.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the charges on Wednesday, describing the case as one of the most disturbing she has ever encountered. The boy, Zemar King, was smothered to death on October 24, weeks before his mother left for Georgia with her 3-year-old son.

Landlord Makes Gruesome Discovery

Zemar’s remains were found on January 6 when the landlord of the home was preparing it for new tenants. Detroit police immediately launched an investigation but initially withheld details about the case.

“This case is rather shocking,” said Detroit interim Police Chief Todd Bettison. “In my 27-year career, I don’t remember seeing anything like this.”

Mother Arrested in Georgia

The 41-year-old mother was arrested in Georgia on January 10 in an unrelated case. Online records indicate she was taken into custody in Cobb County while awaiting extradition to Michigan to face a murder charge and additional criminal offenses.

Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the killing. Zemar’s father recently learned of his son’s death, adding another layer of heartbreak to the case.

Prosecutor Calls Crime “Among the Most Callous”

Prosecutor Worthy condemned the alleged actions, emphasizing the horrific nature of the crime.

“I have been a prosecutor for a long time, and I often say that I have seen it all. The horrors of this child abuse case defy that,” she said. “The alleged actions of this defendant are among the most callous I have seen and hope never to see again.”

The case has left the community in shock as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the child’s death.
