Teenager Dead, Another Hospitalized After Exchange of Fire

Memphis, Tennessee – A tragic incident unfolded early Friday morning in Memphis, Tennessee, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuries to two others. The shootout with armed suspects also left one suspect deceased and another hospitalized.

Shots Fired During Suspicious Vehicle Stop

Memphis Police officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle at approximately 2:00 am near Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue. As officers approached the vehicle, a suspect opened fire, prompting the officers to return fire.

Officer Succumbs to Injuries

Officer Joseph McKinney was transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Another officer sustained non-critical injuries and is expected to recover. A third officer received medical attention at the scene.

Suspects Apprehended

Following the exchange of gunfire, the vehicle fled the scene. Officers located the vehicle on Hewlett Road and apprehended one suspect immediately. A second suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended nearby.

Deceased Suspect Had Prior Arrest

Eighteen-year-old suspect Jaylen Lobley was pronounced dead at the scene. Lobley had a prior arrest record, including charges for stolen vehicles and possession of an illegal semi-automatic weapon. Despite these charges, he was released without bond. The remaining suspect, a 17-year-old male, is hospitalized in critical condition.

Chief Calls for End to Gun Violence

“As chief of police, I am hurt right now,” stated Interim Police Chief C.J. Davis. “Today we are here, not just to talk about what happened last night, but to make an appeal to our community that gun violence has to stop.”
