Teens Face Adult Charges for Attempted Murder
A 14-year-old girl from the Detroit area and her 17-year-old boyfriend are facing adult charges after being accused of plotting to kill the girl’s mother. The Macomb County prosecutor’s office announced the charges on Thursday, describing the case as a shocking example of teenage criminal behavior.
Violent Attack Thwarted by Family
The plot came to light after the 17-year-old allegedly broke into the family’s Eastpointe home in July through an unlocked door. According to authorities, the teen attempted to strangle the girl’s mother while she was asleep. The attack was interrupted when other family members confronted the intruder, forcing him to flee the scene.
Eastpointe Police Chief Corey Haines told WJBK-TV that the girl and her boyfriend had met on a social media app and conspired to carry out the attack. “They decided together that they were going to kill mom,” Haines said.
Motive Linked to Parental Discipline
The prosecutor’s office revealed that the girl’s mother had confiscated her phone following behavioral issues at home. The mother was unaware of her daughter’s relationship with the older teen, which had developed online and ultimately led to the violent plot.
Teens Held on High Bail, Await Court Hearings
The girl was arraigned on August 14 on charges of solicitation of murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder. Her bond was set at $1 million. The 17-year-old boyfriend was arraigned on August 12 and faces charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder and assault with intent to murder. His bond was set at $2.5 million.
Both teens are currently being held at the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center and are scheduled for probable cause hearings on Tuesday in Eastpointe District Court.
