Nearly $1 Million Settlement for Husband of Bride Killed in Drunk Driving Crash

Aric Hutchinson to Receive Compensation After Wedding Night Tragedy

A settlement has been reached in the case of a South Carolina bride killed by a drunk driver on her wedding night last year. The husband of the victim, Aric Hutchinson, will receive nearly $1 million as part of the agreement.

Settlement Reached with Businesses

According to The Post and Courier, Hutchinson will receive approximately $863,300. This amount comes from a settlement with several businesses in Folly Beach: The Drop In Bar & Deli, The Crab Shack, Snapper Jacks, Progressive Auto Insurance, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Charleston County Circuit Court Judge Roger Young approved the settlement earlier this week.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed

Hutchinson filed a wrongful death lawsuit after the tragic accident on April 28th, 2023. The lawsuit alleges that the driver, Jamie Lee Komoroski, was intoxicated after visiting multiple bars around Folly Beach before speeding in a rented Toyota Camry. The lawsuit further details Komoroski’s blood alcohol concentration was reportedly more than three times the legal limit.

Crash Details and Aftermath

The crash occurred as Hutchinson and his new wife, 34-year-old Samantha Miller, were leaving their wedding reception in a golf cart. Komoroski’s vehicle struck the golf cart, throwing it over 100 yards. Miller, still in her wedding dress, died at the scene. Hutchinson sustained a brain injury and multiple broken bones in the collision.

Criminal Charges Against Driver

Komoroski is currently free on bond as she awaits trial. She faces felony charges including driving under the influence resulting in death, reckless homicide, and two counts of felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury.

Settlement Amount and Future Proceedings

While the total settlement reaches $1.3 million, legal fees will reduce the final amount received by Hutchinson. Komoroski’s criminal case is ongoing and separate from the civil settlement.
