A Mississippi woman is in custody after allegedly fatally shooting her estranged husband outside the Pearl River County Chancery Court in Poplarville on Tuesday afternoon. The tragic incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of divorce proceedings between the couple, according to authorities.
Incident Details
The shooting took place just before 1 p.m. in the courthouse entryway. The victim, identified as 62-year-old James Ray Saucier, was shot and killed. His estranged wife, 49-year-old Tanya Saucier, was apprehended at the scene and is now being held at the Lenoir Rowell Criminal Justice Center in Poplarville on a murder charge.
Eyewitness Accounts
James Saucier’s attorney, Don Rafferty, recounted the chaotic moments following the hearing.
“I was handling some paperwork when things went crossways,” Rafferty told WLOX-TV.
State Rep. Jansen Owen, who was representing Tanya Saucier, said he was leaving the courthouse when the shooting unfolded.
“Basically, I left the courthouse, and she opened fire. I did ultimately subdue her, at which point she made threats against me,” Owen said. “I administered first aid as best I could to Mr. Saucier.”
Family Reacts to the Tragedy
The incident has left the family reeling. Johanna Peterson, a family member, expressed the profound shock and pain caused by the events.
“It’s confusing for us, tragic,” Peterson told WVUE-TV. “The family is in shock, as well as frustrated and enraged.”
History of Domestic Violence Allegations
Court records reveal a troubling history between the couple. James Saucier was indicted in August on charges of aggravated assault and domestic violence with a deadly weapon. He was accused of shooting Tanya Saucier five times, including once in the face, approximately a year ago.
“My client said he was defending himself,” Rafferty said of James Saucier’s prior allegations.
The case was scheduled for trial on March 4.
Legal and Community Impact
The shooting highlights the devastating consequences of domestic disputes that escalate into violence. Tanya Saucier now faces a murder charge, and the incident has sparked questions about security at courthouses and the emotional toll of contentious legal proceedings.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the community mourns the loss of James Saucier. Further legal proceedings are expected to determine the next steps in the case.
